Deep Roots, Growing Faith
The history of Chapel On The Hill, once known as Roseland Presbyterian Church, is deeply woven into the fabric of Essex County. Long before Roseland was the bustling borough it is today, the spiritual foundations of this community were being laid by early families seeking a dedicated space for connection, worship, and shared life.
Foundations in the West Essex Hills
The roots of our Presbyterian heritage in this region stretch back to the late 18th century, when the area was still known as “Horseneck”. Local residents initially traveled to neighboring Caldwell for worship. However, as the population in the southern part of the township grew throughout the 1800s, a distinct local identity began to take shape.
By the time the community officially took the name Roseland in 1874, inspired by the beautiful wild roses blooming across the hills. The desire for a central, local house of worship was undeniable.
A Sacred Landmark on Freeman Street
To meet the needs of a growing community, a dedicated sanctuary was established at 40 Freeman Street. For generations, this building has stood as more than just a landmark of wood and stone; it has been a sacred anchor for local families.
Over the decades, the church has evolved alongside the neighborhood:
- Generations of Leadership: Faithful leaders and long-serving pastors, like the Reverend Charles H. Peet (who guided our congregation from 1960 to 1985), anchored the church through eras of monumental social change.
- A Sanctuary for Everyone: Our spaces have hosted everything from community theater and youth performing arts to vital support groups and regional ecumenical studies.
- A Spirit of Collaboration: We have proudly served as a founding member of the Roseland Community Interfaith Council, building bridges across different backgrounds and traditions.
Redefining Our Heritage for Tomorrow
Today, as The Chapel on the Hill at Roseland, and as we look to the future, we carry the resilience and dedication of those who came before us. We honor our rich Christian heritage not by standing still, but by moving forward.
Just as the early founders realized that the community needed a local space to connect right here in Roseland, we recognize that the modern world needs a new kind of church, one where the Sunday morning service is a beautiful part of what we do, but not the only foundation.
We are stepping out of the past and co-creating a dynamic ecosystem of connection, creation, and growth right here on Freeman Street. Our history is still being written, and there is a place for your story in it.
